Urgency to Rise
John 20:19-23
"Again Jesus said, 'Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.' And with that he breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'"
(John 20:21-22)
It's easy to feel overwhelmed as a Christian. Responsibilities from our own communities and around the world confront us. We dare not ignore the burning issues of economic injustice, racism, abuse to the innocent, and so on. But we also dare not ignore the eternal and unchanging command of God to His church: to make the Gospel of Jesus Christ available everywhere in all its fullness.
These verses in John show us Jesus defining His identity with His Father under whose authority He did His work. Jesus passes that same responsibility on to us: spread the Gospel of salvation to the world. If we remember and hold on to the fact that our authority comes from God Himself, we are able to make that charge a part of our everyday life. Jesus has modeled by His words and actions how to proceed with the job. We don't go in our own strength, but in that of His Spirit. Know what a privilege it is in these days of challenge that God takes us, the Church, and makes us vehicles through which He does His work.

Take hold of the God of the Universe as your very hope and confidence as you spread the Gospel in this world, at home or abroad.

John 20:19-23
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21 Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."
