A Fearful Heart
Psalm 27:1-6
"There they were, overwhelmed with dread, where there was nothing to dread."
(PSALM 53:5)
My husband was leaving on another two-week business trip, and I would be alone again with our three small children. The daytime hours when he was gone were fine, but when the sun started to set, my heart would fill with dread. Our home is set a ways back from the road on a large wooded lot, far from our one neighbor. I imagined night-time dangers stalking our secluded country house and yard.
These irrational fears became a very real spiritual battle for me. As I prayed for heavenly protection, they slowly subsided and disappeared. They were replaced by confidence in God's ability to watch over me.
Is there a fear lurking in your heart, something perhaps you are even afraid or ashamed to admit? We can trust our heavenly Father, the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3), to relieve those fears. When we make God our refuge, He promises to command angels to guard us. He draws near to us through Jesus. The Holy Spirit, our Comforter, settles our fearful hearts.
INSIGHT
Day by day and with each passing moment,/ Trusting in my Father's wise bestowment,/ I've no cause for worry or for fear. (Karolina Sandell-Berg, 1865)

Psalm 27
Of David.
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked advance against me
to devour me,
it is my enemies and my foes
who will stumble and fall.
3 Though an army besiege me,
my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then I will be confident.
4 One thing I ask from the LORD,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the LORD
and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble
he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle
and set me high upon a rock.
6 Then my head will be exalted
above the enemies who surround me;
at his tabernacle I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make music to the LORD.
