Tree Hugger
Proverbs 3:13-18
"She [wisdom] is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed."
(PROVERBS 3:18)
"Tree Hugger" is a modern term with political implications. Some like it and some don't. But did you know that the original tree hugger was one of the writers of the Bible? Solomon likened wisdom to a tree of life and guaranteed our success in life if we would "hug" or take hold of her.
When Solomon used the term "tree of life," he was making a poetic reference to the tree of life that stood in the Garden of Eden. That tree was part of God's plan for mankind and for the world. It would have been great wisdom if Adam had followed His plan. Certainly, the term "tree hugger" would have different connotations today!
But Solomon made it clear that wisdom is still available to us. God still has a plan to bless His people. If we will focus on Him and hold on to wisdom, He guarantees success. Solomon had not yet seen the fulfillment of God's plan in Jesus Christ, but we have. We can embrace Jesus Christ today. Focusing on Him is holding on to wisdom, something more precious than rubies (v. 15).

New International Version 1984 (NIV1984)
13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom,
the man who gains understanding,
14 for she is more profitable than silver
and yields better returns than gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her.
16 Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her;
those who lay hold of her will be blessed.

"Now you're a Christian, so you'd better shape up and act like it!" At least that's what many of us believe in our hearts. It's true that our lives should change, but that's not how God's grace works.
