ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (OCTOBER 1, 2012)

Messiah, Our Passover

Leviticus 23:4-5;
1 Corinthians 5:6-8

"Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation."
(1 CORINTHIANS 5:7)

The first of seven "appointed" annual Feast days given by the LORD to Israel was the Passover. Of all the Jewish holidays, Passover is the one for which I have the fondest memories. I can still taste the sinus-clearing sting of Bubbie's (Grandmother's) homemade horseradish atop a mound of gefilte fish. But it wasn't all about the food. This was about history - the mighty God of Israel delivering His people from slavery and bondage in a foreign land.

As our family got together each year to retell the story of how "the LORD brought the Israelites out of Egypt" (Exodus 12:51), I always wondered why it was the blood of a lamb "on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses" which saved God's people from certain death. They were saved by the blood of the lamb.

God's people are still saved by the blood of the Lamb today! One day John the Baptizer saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). Jesus is our true Passover Lamb!

INSIGHT
THERE IS A FOUNTAIN FILLED WITH BLOOD
DRAWN FROM EMMANUEL'S VEINS.
AND SINNERS PLUNGED BENEATH THAT FLOOD LOSE ALL THEIR GUILTY STAINS.
(WILLIAM COWPER, 1772)

Leviticus 23:4-5
New International Version (NIV)
The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread
4 “‘These are the Lord’s appointed festivals, the sacred assemblies you are to proclaim at their appointed times: 5 The Lord’s Passover begins at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month.
1 Corinthians 5:6-8
New International Version (NIV)
6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
