ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (NOVEMBER 29, 2012)

Goodwill Ambassadors

2 Corinthians 5:18-21

"We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us."
(2 CORINTHIANS 5:20A)

An ambassador sent out by a government might wear some sort of sash across the chest bearing the name of the place or people represented. As Christians, we are Christ's ambassadors. Our sash, however, isn't something we wear across our chest to identify us. Rather it is our manner of living, our humility and our words which identify us with Jesus. Even dressed in prison clothes with no fancy sash at all, I was a representative for Christ throughout my incarceration.

People should be able to look at us and identify us as Christians. In today's passage, Paul even says that God is making His appeal to His enemies through us. Elsewhere, Paul tells Christians that our citizenship is in heaven. And he explains why we have been sent: to bring the message of reconciliation. If ever there was a place in need of peace and reconciliation, it is behind the gates of prison. But the calling for every Christian anywhere is to represent the King of kings to this fallen world we live in, behind the bars of sin.

2 Corinthians 5:18-21
New International Version (NIV)
18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin[a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
