ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (DECEMBER 3, 2012)


Freedom from Fear

Romans 13
"Rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you." 
(ROMANS 13:3)

We bring stress on ourselves when we live our lives in disobedience to the authorities. In prison, there were rules about the types and amounts of property one could have. In the California system, I was allowed only ten books and/or periodicals. But I always had more. I was allowed only one pair of headphones. Yet I always had two. There were other similar things I did which broke the rules. 

Consequently, every time there was a major cell search, I got scared. I would live in fear of the time they'd come to my cell to search it and would find my "contraband". Even now - with prison many years behind me - I notice that I am much more stressed when I am speeding down the highway than when I am obeying the driving laws. Do you know that feeling? When we cut corners at work, bend the tax laws, or break the rules society sets up, we live in fear of the authorities. Paul instructs us to obey the rules. When we live for Christ in this dark world, His light shines through us and brings freedom from fear.

Submission to Governing Authorities
13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
Love Fulfills the Law
8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,”[a] and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
The Day Is Near
11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.[c]

Building Up

Ephesians 5:1-13


"Do everything in love."
(1 CORINTHIANS 16:14)

"C'MON! You Stink! Why are you on the field?" These were the words one of the Christian brothers used during a softball game. And these words were not directed to someone on the other team. They were yelled at a teammate who had just made his second error, allowing the opponent to score a run. Some camaraderie, right?

For many years in prison, we'd formed Christian teams for softball. The goal was to witness to the other teams and to our fellow prisoners who watched the games. We were supposed to be good sports and act according to our profession of faith. Too often we acted exactly like the other teams. Instead of being witnesses of Jesus, our team couldn't be distinguished from any other. Imagine the impact we could've had if we had encouraged each other rather than discouraged! What if we would say, "You'll get the next one" rather than "You stink"? What if we cared more about winning souls than winning games? Imagine if we played with love. Let's all do that in each of our day's activities.

Loving our Husbands

1 Peter 3:1-6
"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord." 
(COLOSSIANS 3:18)

In several New Testament passages both Paul and Peter write about wives submitting to their husbands. Even for the first readers of their letters, this was a big issue. Back in Genesis 3 one of the descriptions of the curse or by-product of sin is a woman's desire to dominate. 

Much argument has arisen over the idea of a woman's submission to her husband. Some of the greatest opponents of biblical submission forget the last phrase of today's Scripture passage. A wife is to submit to her husband in a way that "is fitting to the Lord." What is the fitting way that we submit to the Lord? We respond to His grace with gratitude, with a desire to please Him, and with joy for His care for us. These are ways that a woman might respond to her husband. 

The problems come, of course, when one or both spouses do not treat the other as the Lord treats us. It is hard to see through the bitterness and strife in those times. The only hope for the disintegrating marriage is submitting to Jesus Christ whose grace restores.

Loving our Wives

Ephesians 5:25-29


"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word..."
(EPHESIANS 5:25-26)

When we become people who are willing to lay down our own rights and serve another loyally, we are becoming a picture of Christ's love for us. Men can display this love from the Lord in marriages that honor Him, marriages designed to be exclusive and utterly faithful.

Also, a husband's love is to be sacrificial, even as Christ's love for the church is. Men, this may mean that you pour out your life for your bride, giving yourself for her well-being. If a man loves his own body by feeding it and caring for it, he should care for his wife at least the same way.

The end result of the love a man has for his wife is holiness and sanctification. Christ died to make His bride holy and for her sanctification; husbands must love their own wives with her holiness and sanctification in mind. Pray daily with and for your wife. Speak to her in kindness and gentleness. Read Scripture with her. Adore your wife as Christ adores the church, and know that the Lord's perfect love for you is behind it all.

Goodwill Ambassadors

2 Corinthians 5:18-21


"We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us."
(2 CORINTHIANS 5:20A)

An ambassador sent out by a government might wear some sort of sash across the chest bearing the name of the place or people represented. As Christians, we are Christ's ambassadors. Our sash, however, isn't something we wear across our chest to identify us. Rather it is our manner of living, our humility and our words which identify us with Jesus. Even dressed in prison clothes with no fancy sash at all, I was a representative for Christ throughout my incarceration.

People should be able to look at us and identify us as Christians. In today's passage, Paul even says that God is making His appeal to His enemies through us. Elsewhere, Paul tells Christians that our citizenship is in heaven. And he explains why we have been sent: to bring the message of reconciliation. If ever there was a place in need of peace and reconciliation, it is behind the gates of prison. But the calling for every Christian anywhere is to represent the King of kings to this fallen world we live in, behind the bars of sin.

Walking the Walk

Psalm 1


"A truthful witness saves lives, but a false witness is deceitful."
(PROVERBS 14:25)

"You're a Christian?" Those words nearly knocked me to my knees. You see, I had been a believer in Jesus for seven years when a co-worker in the prison cabinet shop asked me this. How could he not know that I was a Christian? I had taught Bible studies, evangelized out on the yard, volunteered in the chapel, etc. Didn't he see who I was? But then I gave it some thought.

In the cabinet shop, I was trying to live a double life. I wanted to fit in and be liked, so I acted like everyone else. I gave the warning signals when an officer was walking through the shop. I stood lookout while men smuggled their contraband jewelry boxes out to the yard. Were these things I should do if I were claiming the name of Christ in my life?

This conversation made me realize that I wasn't being a truthful witness for Jesus. I had to repent and begin walking the walk instead of just talking the talk. It was amazing to see just how much I was able to talk to people about Christ when they saw me actually living for Him.

ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (NOVEMBER 27, 2012)


Strength in Softness

James 3:1-12



"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."
(PROVERBS 15:1)

Have you heard the phrase "adding fuel to the fire"? When people disagree, conversations can degenerate quickly. I saw this repeatedly firsthand with my prisonmates through the years. One careless voice inflection or one wrong word, and a discussion turns into an argument, or an argument into a fight.

Proverbs teaches us principles for walking in the light in a world darkened by sin. The wise man will use a soft answer to turn away wrath while the fool will use harsh words and stir up strife. James tells us that "the tongue is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire..." (3:6). I think about how my tongue and my word choices set the whole course of my life on fire, even to the point of imprisonment.

It's not always just what we say, but also how we say it that leads to problems. Our soft answers will lessen conflict and turn away anger. Don't "add fuel to the fire"; let the fire of Christ's love fuel your heart for Him.

Taming the Tongue

Conflict Resolution

Genesis 4:1-15


"'In your anger do not sin': Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold."
(EPHESIANS 4:26-27)

One way we can live as light in a world of darkness is in our conflict resolution. Take a look at Cain in the Bible and how he handled things. He was jealous of his brother Abel for no other reason than Abel's devotion to God. Cain's jealousy turned to rage against his brother, and he killed him. I can identify with Cain. Before Christ saved me, I handled most of my conflicts with violence, either from my lips or my hands. My Cain-like responses to conflict resolution landed me a life-sentence in prison.

But Paul writes to us of a better way. Though we will have anger in our life, our response to it ought not to be sinful. Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:31 to "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice." In place of those things, we must "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" (v. 32). The life-sentence we all bear has been lifted by the One who is slow to anger with us, compassionate and gracious, abounding in steadfast love.

INSIGHT
SEEK TO IMITATE CHRIST, WHO CERTAINLY WAS ANGRY AT TIMES. YET HE NEVER SINNED.

True Freedom

John 8: 31-36


"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."
(JOHN 8:36)

While in prison, I thought about freedom in terms of which side of the fence I was on. All of us knew that those on the outside were free and those on the inside were not. This isn't completely accurate, however.

Actually, freedom in Christ shows us there is more to it than just what walls you in. A believer in Jesus has been freed from all sorts of bondage. As a young Christian, I was bound by what other prisoners thought of me. I wanted to be a Christian but also be in with the other groups. This burden kept me from raising my hands in worship or clapping when singing because I didn't want people to think I was some sort of "Jesus Freak."

One night, when a man was teaching on John 8, the Holy Spirit opened my eyes. At that moment, I realized that I was freer than I had ever been in my life, yet I was standing in the middle of Corcoran Prison! Serving Jesus is true freedom regardless of where you are. Only through Him will you find the freedom that gives life to the full even in the midst of despair.

INSIGHT
TRUE FREEDOM INVOLVES OUR POSITION IN CHRIST, NOT WHERE OUR PHYSICAL BODIES ARE. GIVE UP BONDAGE, KNOW CHRIST, AND SEE HOW FREE YOU CAN BE.

Rubber-Meets-the-Road

Ephesians 4:1-24


"Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body."
(EPHESIANS 4:25)

"I want to change my plea from 'not guilty' to 'guilty,'" I told my attorney five days after I became a Christian while in the Monterey County Jail in 1989. She advised against it. I was facing a life sentence plus 14 years for my crimes; I'd serve a minimum of 30 years at best.

This was a rubber-meets-the-road time for me: do I admit my guilt, tell the truth and go to prison for much of my life? Or do I keep lying and hope to beat the case? I chose the guilty plea, trusting the Lord would honor my obedience.

Each of us confronts a similar reality: do we admit our guilt from sin or do we put it out of our minds and try to overcome it on our own? The "one body" Paul speaks of is that of Jesus Christ, and it is He who took every punishment for our guilt. The "rubber met the road" when He gave His life for us at Calvary.

In an amazing act of grace, the prosecutor dropped three of my charges, sparing me the 14 additional years. What an unexpected blessing! Isn't that just what God's grace is for us?

Joy, Rejoicing and Peace

Philippians 4



"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
(PHILIPPIANS 4:4)

If you're like me, you are thinking, "Paul, how can you expect me to rejoice in my current circumstances? You can't possibly know what I'm going through." If you read 2 Corinthians 11 or Acts 16, you will see that the Apostle Paul did indeed understand trials and suffering. Yet through all of his suffering, he had joy. In fact, the words for "joy" and "rejoice" appear 16 times in this short letter which Paul wrote from prison!

Where does this joy and rejoicing come from? Would I have been marked by that kind of joy through all of my years in prison? Paul urges us that "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure...think about such things" (v.8-9). Jesus is truth incarnate. Jesus is noble; He is the King of kings. Jesus is right; He is the Righteous One. Jesus is pure as the Lamb of God without spot or blemish. If you want to have joy and rejoicing, follow Paul's example and meditate on Christ and what He has done for you. "The God of peace will be with you" (v. 9).

Refined Like Silver

Psalm 66



"For you, O God, tested us; you refined us like silver. You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs."
(PSALM 66:10-11)

While the imagery of imprisonment resonates with me in particular, Psalm 66 is a beautiful call to all the earth to turn to God. It is a vignette in which the psalmist speaks of God's work in creation, our redemption, and our response to this work. In verse 10, the psalmist writes that God tested the people and refined them like silver. The refinement came in the form of imprisonment.

Friends, do you think of your afflictions in these terms? Do you recognize them as coming from God as part of your refinement? What a comfort it was to know that my incarceration was from God and that what I had meant for evil God meant for my good.

Know that your burdens are from the Lord, and there is not one anguish you will ever experience that He has not already experienced for you. The good news is that He "brought us out to a place of abundance" (v. 12). This is the truth for every believer, whether it is here on earth or in glory for eternity. For God has promised it!

A Biblical Hope

Hebrews 6:9-20



"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure..."
(HEBREWS 6:19)

Generally, when people use the word "hope," they mean "desire or wish," as in "I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow for the game." I thought a lot about hope while imprisoned, and I can assure you my thoughts ran much deeper than "I hope we get some good food today." Just as the biblical writers had something else in mind regarding "hope," so did I. What I knew to be my hope, the anchor for my soul, is the only One I could count on: Jesus Christ. The writer of Hebrews 6 uses the word "hope" not expressing mere desire, but an assured expectation.

We who hope in Christ mustn't look at our salvation as something we only wish will end in eternity with Him. Rather, we should be secure in our belief, confidently living in that hope now and looking toward the day when the promise will be fully realized. Fanny Crosby expressed it in the words of her 1873 hymn: "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood."

Of Rain and Animals

Psalm 136

"Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make music to our God on the harp. He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain..."
(PSALM 147:7-8)

It has been said that we don't know what we have until we lose it. Some of the most valuable things I lost when I ended up in Corcoran Prison were the sounds of nature. The cells at Corcoran do not have windows that open, so we never heard the morning chirp of the birds or the rain as it hit the sidewalk. For nearly four years I went without the sounds of nature.

I will never forget a February night and early morning hours in 1993. I had transferred to Soledad prison, a much older joint with cells that had windows which opened. When I went to bed that first night, it was raining outside, and I could hear (and smell) the rain. When I woke the next morning, I heard the birds, squirrels and cats all crying out to their Maker. I rolled over on my bed and joined with them in a chorus of praise, thankful for the blessed mercies of rain and animals.

The goodness and kindness of our Savior to us is like the refreshing sound of rain and the delightful sounds of nature. May you never lose sight of His mercies.

ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (NOVEMBER 20, 2012)


Light and Darkness


1 John 1:1-10



"God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth."
1 JOHN 1:5B-6

If ever there was a place characterized by darkness in many senses of the word, it would be in the confines of prison. I know that for a fact because I spent more than 15 years there for crimes I committed. I will never stop praising the Lord whose light and grace descended on my life while I was behind bars. Over the years I began to see that even while I was in the midst of despair and regret, God was calling me to live as a light to Him in the darkness.

In 1 Timothy 6:16, Paul says that God dwells in "inapproachable light." We who live in a fallen world - in or outside of prison walls - cannot quite grasp what pure, unapproachable light is. Yet that is our God.

Fellowship with God, who is light, involves walking in the light of His Word and not in the darkness of this world. That can be overwhelming for many of us. But we need not lose hope. Our Savior who is the Light of the World conquered the very depths of darkness for us. Set free, not one of us who knows Him remains imprisoned by sin any longer.

Looking Back, Looking Forward

Hebrews 6


"Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, 'Thus far has the Lord helped us.'"
(1 SAMUEL 7:12)

Now that we are a month into the New Year, it's good to look back and recall God's mercy and faithfulness to us in the past. With hindsight we see where God removed an obstacle or built a way over it.

Joshua instructed one man from each tribe of Israel to bring a stone from the Jordan River to set up as a memorial in the place where they camped on their first night in the land God had promised His people. We, too, ought to remember the victories won thus far along our way. Those experiences are the memorial stones that remind us to press forward knowing everything we need has already been prepared for the next segment of the journey. We are given fresh strength, peace and joy to tackle each new day and week and month.

Paul's writings encourage us to hold on to hope because our hope is in the Rock of our salvation: Jesus. Never will He fail you; always will His strong arm be sufficient to carry you through. Truly, you can move forward with assurance of an amazing future with Christ.

ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (NOVEMBER 18, 2012)


The Spark of Hope

Romans 5


"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."
(HEBREWS 11:1)

Hope may begin as a tiny yearning, but when fanned by encouragement, it can light a mighty blaze. It's life-giving. People may feel ill. Once assured their symptoms will pass and that they will recover, they are often strengthened until they are well. A business may be failing. But when the owner sees signs of increased demand for his product, he perseveres through the down-time.

The power of hope may be most obvious when it's gone. It's tragic to look into the eyes of one who has lost hope. To anticipate the realization of the thing we're looking forward to gives joy and motivates us. But the person without hope can hardly take another step.

Even in the direst of situations we need not despair because of one - and only one - hope that lies at the heart of every believer: the hope given to us in Jesus Christ. As our world caves in around us, even a spark of hope in Jesus is enough to cling to. That spark grows into the fire of faith of knowing our answer will come, if not in this world, then in the next.

For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! 16 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Redeem the Time

Colossians 3:23-4:6



"Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity."
(COLOSSIANS 4:5B)

To be good stewards of the moments we're given is a constant challenge. Could any of us honestly say at the end of a day that we had made "the most of every opportunity"? Perhaps you've longed as I have at times to get back the hours that have passed and re-do them differently. Or perhaps you've begun to learn that making the best use of our time does not mean rushing pell-mell into each new project. So how do we redeem the time?

We do so by realizing the One who has redeemed us has all of our days measured out even before they have come to be. We remind ourselves that "the LORD redeems his servants; no one will be condemned who takes refuge in him" (Psalm 34:21-22). Revelation 12:12 tells us Satan knows his time is short; he'll try to hinder the progress of God's people in any way he can. But our Lord is greater than any trial that may come our way. It may even be in the very heart of the trial that you find Him, covering you with His feathers and giving you refuge under His wings (see Psalm 91:4).

Blessed with Favor

Ruth 2


"For surely, O Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield."
(PSALM 5:12)

Both Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi, were widowed and destitute. With no means of support, Ruth gathered anything missed by those harvesting the barley near Bethlehem. She was a foreigner knowing neither the people nor the land of Judah. But God's leading placed her in a field owned by Naomi's relative, Boaz, and there she gleaned. In time she came to know Boaz and even married him. Generations down the line, she became an ancestor of Jesus Christ Himself. Ruth was living in the center of God's will, and she knew His favor. Ruth was not jumping through hoops to win favor with God and man. She did what she needed to do each day in the place and at the time God chose for her.

What a relief it is for each of us who have received Jesus as Lord to know God does not require us to perform any extreme measures to qualify for His blessing on our lives. He has extended His favor to meet our every need, going so far as to meet our greatest need for salvation through the free gift of life given to us in Jesus.

2 Now Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side, a man of standing from the clan of Elimelek, whose name was Boaz.
2 And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor.”
Naomi said to her, “Go ahead, my daughter.” 3 So she went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelek.
4 Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters, “The Lord be with you!”
“The Lord bless you!” they answered.
5 Boaz asked the overseer of his harvesters, “Who does that young woman belong to?”
6 The overseer replied, “She is the Moabite who came back from Moab with Naomi. 7 She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.’ She came into the field and has remained here from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter.”
8 So Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. 9 Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.”
10 At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She asked him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me—a foreigner?”
11 Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. 12 May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”
13 “May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord,” she said. “You have put me at ease by speaking kindly to your servant—though I do not have the standing of one of your servants.”
14 At mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar.”
When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over. 15 As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, “Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her. 16 Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her.”
17 So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah.[a] 18 She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough.
19 Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!”
Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” she said.
20 “The Lord bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.” She added, “That man is our close relative; he is one of our guardian-redeemers.[b]”
21 Then Ruth the Moabite said, “He even said to me, ‘Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.’”
22 Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, “It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with the women who work for him, because in someone else’s field you might be harmed.”
23 So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.

Victory Comes in Cans

1 Samuel 17:32-50


"I can do everything through him who gives me strength."
(PHILIPPIANS 4:13)

Goliath, champion of the Philistines, taunted Saul and his army morning and evening for 40 days. "Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects" (1 Samuel 17:8-9), he declared. The response of Saul and each of the Israelites - including David's three oldest brothers - was, "I can't!" How right they were! Young David's response was, "I can!" because in his simple faith he knew that the God who had enabled him to defend his father's sheep from a lion and a bear was well able to give victory over Goliath.

Taking on the giants in our lives requires more than just "can-do" positive thinking. Our trust is in the One who has chosen us to be His hands to do the deed. Our trust is in a Savior who conquered Satan and death. David fired the stone from his sling knowing God had prepared him for that moment. Each of us stands with the God of all Creation who can and will accomplish all His holy will, sometimes even using us as His instruments to do so.

33 Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.”
38 Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. 39 David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them.
“I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.
41 Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. 42 He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome, and he despised him. 43 He said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!”
45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.

Great Expectations

Genesis 37:2-28


"Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, and the justice of your cause like the noonday sun."
(PSALM 37:5)

Do you remember dreams you had when you were younger? Visions of being an Olympian or a world traveler or the discoverer of something great may now be replaced by family obligations and a sales job that pays the bills. Young Joseph had a dream - one the Lord placed in him indicating how the future really would be - and in it he saw his brothers bowing to him. When they threw him into a cistern and sold him into slavery, he had to question the reversal of roles. Rather than being served, he became a servant and then a prisoner. In that dream God had shown Joseph the outcome but not the process. Years of hardship would come before Joseph saw it fulfilled.

Peter teaches that God is not slow in keeping His promise, that time for Him is not the same as it is for us. And today's passage from Psalm 37 reminds us that any of our good efforts - our righteousness - will not bring our great expectations about. It is God alone who makes our efforts shine like the sun (and shine because of the Son!) in His good timing.

3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate[a] robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

12 Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem, 13 and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.”
“Very well,” he replied.
14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.
When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”
16 He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”
17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’”
So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.
19 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”
21 When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.
23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.
25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.
26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? 27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.
28 So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels[b] of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.
