ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (MAY 19, 2012)

What Kind of People?

Galatians 5:22-26

"Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming."
(2 PETER 3:11-12)

In commenting on these verses, Michael Green says that "a man's character is the only thing he can take out of this life with him." Actually, we do not even take that! When I leave here, I will leave clinging only to the grace and stronghold of my Savior, Jesus Christ, not anything I have done. Our world will not carry on forever, but those of us who are believers in Christ will. So with that humbling reality, what kind of people ought we to be while we remain on this earth?

Peter tells us in two words: holy and godly. Because we belong to God, we should reflect His character qualities in our lives the same way a child reflects much of his parents in his upbringing. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to be like Jesus, holy and godly.

If you read the list of the "fruit of the Spirit" in Galatians 5:22-23, you'll find a perfect description of the character of Jesus Christ. Those are the qualities that the Holy Spirit will increasingly cultivate in our lives as well, reflecting our holy and godly Savior.

Galatians 5:22-26
New International Version (NIV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

WHAT DOES MARRIAGE MEAN [PART 5]
with Tim & Kathy Keller

Marriage isn't easy, but it is good. It was God's idea from the beginning and can be deeply fulfilling, but we need to understand God's purpose for it.
