Perceptions
When you consider it to be a beautiful day, it is. When you believe that you are happy, you are.
Expect to find an answer, and you will. Know that something is possible for you, and it surely comes about.
Your perceptions do not merely reflect an objective, unresponsive reality over which you have no control. Your perceptions shape the reality that you experience.
The way you see your life has a great influence on the way your life unfolds. How are you choosing to see your life?
Your perceptions shine a light upon the world around you. The world that you actually experience depends on how and where you shine that light.
How do you most sincerely wish for this day, this life, this world to be? What you choose to see is what you will cause to be.

ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (JUNE 12, 2012)
To See Jesus
John 12:20-36
"They came to Philip... with a request. 'Sir,' they said, 'we would like to see Jesus.'"
(JOHN 12:21)
Have you noticed how easy it is to become distracted from our first priority? After many years of ministry, I certainly have seen that in our churches. We debate which Bible translations to use and which hymn book to sing out of; we set up committees until there are hardly enough people to attend them all; we debate about musical instruments vs. piano and organ, worship teams vs. choirs, etc. Though there is a place for these discussions, they are not why the church exists. The church's priority (and ours!) is to exalt Jesus Christ. Etch that into your heart!
How we need the passion behind the words of John 12:21: "Sir, we would like to see Jesus"! I taped a copy of that verse to the pen holder on my desk, facing me, as a daily reminder to not be sidetracked with non-essentials. You may be trying to find your way through life and all of its clutter. What you really need is to see Jesus. Nail these words to your own spirit, remembering that Jesus' greatest priority, even as the nails held Him to the cross, is you!

ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (JUNE 11, 2012)
Fellowship of Faith
Acts 4:23-35
"All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had."
(ACTS 4:32)
I sat around the campfire with family and friends, and the sharing and laughter went on for several hours. Most in this circle had come through times of shattered dreams, broken relationships, loss of loved ones, and other hardships. Yet the sincerity and joy of their faith was evident. There was no hidden motive or agenda, no "one-up-manship" as they spoke.
The unifying factor was their faith in the Savior. They had weathered the storms of life because Jesus was there, walking through it with them and giving them strength to endure. While circumstances weren't perfect, they had Him and knew that He promised to guide, direct, sustain, and even restore their joy. Sure, the scars were there, but the reality of a living Savior offered the ability to smile and extend love and friendship to those around them.
No matter how deep the wounds and scars in your life, Jesus Christ brings hope and joy back to you. He bears the scars forever of having died for every heartache and evil you've known.

For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.

Overcoming the World
Isaiah 54:11-17
"'No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,' declares the Lord."
(ISAIAH 54:17)
While this passage refers to the coming time when our Lord returns, it also is practical now. I know these words of Isaiah meant much to my doctor and friend whose son in the military was in a war-zone. My friend prayed this verse constantly, asking God to keep any enemy or weapon from touching his son. To be an overcomer implies that one first is or has experienced being under attack in some way. Hardly anyone would not fit that description. Ideally, we'd all emerge from the "battle zone" unwavering in our faith and still joyful in Christ. I've seen many a trial-worn believer come through times of suffering. If it weren't for the fact that our Overcomer, Jesus, endured every hardship and evil of this world for us, it would indeed be hard to carry on.
Satan's goal is to squeeze us into the world's mold. God's goal is for us to follow Him and battle the world's wickedness, living "self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age" (Titus 2:12). Celebrate your faith in our ultimate Overcomer!

Bright Spots

Life is rich and complicated, ever-changing and coming at you from every direction. You always have the opportunity to make the very most of it all.
You can grab on to those bright spots and nurture them toward magnificent proportions. In the midst of all the noise and confusion, you can take a glimmer of hope and build it into a dominant force.
Whatever may be going on in your life, there are bright spots that you can find and build upon and utilize to create great value. Even now those bright spots are there, ready for you to develop into something truly special.

ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (JUNE 9, 2012)
World Changers
Acts 8:1-25
"On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria."
(ACTS 8:1)
I've been reading in Acts of how God moved through the early church to spread the Gospel. Suffering and persecution had forced the Christians in Jerusalem out of their comfort zone and into Judea and Samaria, fulfilling the second part of Acts 8:1.
It's true that some are called and commissioned to preach the Gospel, but all of us who belong to Him are commissioned to live the Gospel. I recently read somewhere that ordinary people can become extraordinary world changers. God may move us out of our comfort zones, taking us ordinary people and doing His extraordinary work through us. What greater honor could there be than representing Him to others?
As I pen these words, a colleague is in China teaching and preaching to thousands. Out of his comfort zone? Absolutely! And just last night we visited two "retired" Christian friends who serve Christ as they volunteer driving residents wherever they need to go. Through one person at a time living out the joy of Christ in their lives, the world is being changed!

The Church Persecuted and Scattered
On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. 2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off men and women and put them in prison.
Philip in Samaria
4 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ[a] there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 With shrieks, evil[b] spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city.

18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”
24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
25 When they had testified and proclaimed the word of the Lord, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.

Stand Firm
2 Thessalonians 2:13-17"So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter."
(2 THESSALONIANS 2:15)
Looking back over the years, I've been reminded of the thrill of being taught and challenged by faithful men of God. There was a time in high school that several of us guys would meet with a "Nav" from the Navigator Home in Oakland, CA. He gave us the freedom to be ourselves, laugh, joke, and then would challenge us with study and memorization of Scripture. I still have my "memory pack" of cards with verses I worked on memorizing then. They formed a solid foundation for my faith and a protection against evil attack.
The Apostle Paul is reminding the believers in Thessalonica of how they have been chosen for salvation from eternity past. Knowing this, there was no point in being stirred up or agitated by the false teaching of the day. What is important, however, is that they hold on to the solid teaching that had been passed on to them. It's relevant for us also. Cling to the precious promises and truths you know from the Bible, and be ready to share them with a world that needs Jesus. Stand firm!

Daily Commitment
Ecclesiastes 9:1-10
"Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for it is now that God favors what you do."
(ECCLESIASTES 9:7)
Do you ever long for a break so that you can come up for a breath of air? It's typical for many of us to lead lives that are simply too busy. We have careers that surround us with unsolvable problems, relationships that are draining, commitments that suffocate. And thus people at every turn are left restless and without peace or hope. Is that familiar to you or to someone you know?
The Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes gives us practical words on coping with such life issues. Writing in his later years, Solomon tells us to take pleasure in what we are doing and enjoy life because it comes as a gift from the hand of God. He challenges us to live life one day at a time. Even with the limitations that confront us, we can enjoy the lasting goodness of God.
When you belong to Jesus and daily commit your way to Him, it matters not what tempest rises up against you; He will go through it with you. Solomon tells us to do the basics: eat and drink with a joyful heart. Focus on Him who gives you all good things.

Death Comes to All
9 This, too, I carefully explored: Even though the actions of godly and wise people are in God’s hands, no one knows whether God will show them favor. 2 The same destiny ultimately awaits everyone, whether righteous or wicked, good or bad,[a] ceremonially clean or unclean, religious or irreligious. Good people receive the same treatment as sinners, and people who make promises to God are treated like people who don’t.
3 It seems so tragic that everyone under the sun suffers the same fate. That is why people are not more careful to be good. Instead, they choose their own mad course, for they have no hope. There is nothing ahead but death anyway. 4 There is hope only for the living. As they say, “It’s better to be a live dog than a dead lion!”

ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (JUNE 6, 2012)
My Spiritual Roots
1 John 5:1-21
"And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life..."
(1 John 5:11-12)
Do you know about the foundation of your faith? Perhaps it goes back for generations. Or maybe you are just beginning to set down spiritual roots. I remember when I began to feel the Lord's call on my life. It was when my Sunday School teacher told us boys to go home and ask our parents more about Jesus and pray with them. I did exactly that, praying with Dad on my left and Mom on my right at our kitchen table overlooking the Montclair Hills in California.
Through a series of events over the next years, I dedicated my life to serving Christ, and the seriousness and honor of the call of God was made real to me. There's been no greater joy than to see some come to Jesus and follow Him. "He who has the Son has life" is instilled in my heart. "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness" (Colossians 2:6-7). Put your spiritual roots in Jesus who takes great joy in you!

Faith in the Son of God

Conclusion
13 I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. 14 And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. 15 And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.
16 If you see a Christian brother or sister[d] sinning in a way that does not lead to death, you should pray, and God will give that person life. But there is a sin that leads to death, and I am not saying you should pray for those who commit it. 17 All wicked actions are sin, but not every sin leads to death.

It's been 43 years since the group "Gospel Force" developed in our church. The 60s were years of Cultural Revolution in our society, and yes, also within the church. The youth wanted a contemporary music group, and so the "Gospel Force," of which I became a part, was born. Most of the adults in the church family accepted us, and the group grew to more than 40 young people singing for Jesus and sharing our faith. A few months ago we had a reunion, and the words of our verse today brought a fresh reality to my wife Linda and me. From the challenging days of youth to now, married with children and a few grandchildren, these "kids" continue "walking in the truth." What joy that brings as we think of our years serving Jesus together!
John shares his own personal affection and delight as he hears about the lives of his spiritual children in faith. They are people of integrity and endurance. Remember, we often see Christ in others before we see Jesus Himself. And that opens our hearts and drives us to Him.

Please continue providing for such teachers in a manner that pleases God. 7 For they are traveling for the Lord,[c] and they accept nothing from people who are not believers.[d] 8 So we ourselves should support them so that we can be their partners as they teach the truth.
9 I wrote to the church about this, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the leader, refuses to have anything to do with us. 10 When I come, I will report some of the things he is doing and the evil accusations he is making against us. Not only does he refuse to welcome the traveling teachers, he also tells others not to help them. And when they do help, he puts them out of the church.
11 Dear friend, don’t let this bad example influence you. Follow only what is good. Remember that those who do good prove that they are God’s children, and those who do evil prove that they do not know God.[e]

ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (JUNE 4, 2012)
From the Bottom Up
Mark 5:1-20

"When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind... So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him."
(MARK 5:15, 20)
There was probably no more earthy person in those days than one possessed by a demon. The story takes us from this man whose dwelling was in a burial chamber carved out of rock on the hillside, to the freedom of his being healed of the devil's dominance in his life. We read that he was clothed and in his right mind and moving on to the center of the city to proclaim "how much Jesus had done for him." There is nothing more powerful than a personal story. I was blind, but now I see. I was demon-possessed, but now I am free. I was lost, but now am found! Great joy comes from God's transformational work of love and grace.
We may not have found ourselves in such dire straits as the demon-possessed man. But still God takes each one of us from the pit of our sin to a living testimony of how He has and is creating a new person in us. The stories of lives transformed bring joy, hope, courage and renewal. We can't help but find joy in being part of God's redemptive plan and in telling others about it!

The Healing of a Demon-possessed Man

Contentment and Joy
Philippians 4:4-13
"I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want."
(PHILIPPIANS 4:12)
Today I write about something I'm still working on: contentment. I suspect I am not alone. 17th century Puritan Jeremiah Burroughs wrote that contentment is a "rare jewel" in the Christian faith. How true. And how I long for it not to be rare, but to be common in my life! Contentment is much more than just feeling that things are going well. There is certainly no shortage of evil in this sin-stricken world. But when I can look at my whole life and know that whatever God has given me is for my good and His glory, I am beginning to know contentment.
Am I really satisfied and joy-filled in what God has given me? Often the nation of Israel complained against God even though He had provided for them. Their lack of contentment is a stark picture of our own tendency to complain against God. He has full rights to our lives. We can experience contentment and be assured by the words of Octavius Winslow that "in the case of every child of God, calamity never comes alone; it invariably brings Jesus with it."

JESUS IN THE PSALMS [PART 1]
Where do you see Jesus? The more we come to know him, the more we see him in the pages of Scripture and in the world we live in.
ROAD ROBBERY / CARJACKING
Staff travelling in their cars especially during rush hour are advised to take precautionary measures to avoid carjacking incidents and other car crimes especially this season, as most often during the afternoon and evening, a chance of rain is very high which adds up to the heavy traffic particularly in the central business districts and EDSA. These give criminals an opportunity to carry out their unlawful intentions such as carjacking and theft from the vehicle. To avoid these unlawful acts, it is imperative that we know the different modus operandi (mode of operation) on carjacking and car crimes together with several important security guidelines.
Modus Operandi
1.
"Bunggo-Bunggo" Approach
The group scouts for potential victims, usually lady drivers and persons travelling alone. The syndicate identifies and follows the victim. By the time they reach a deserted and remote area, they deliberately crash into the rear end of the victim's car assuming that the victim will stop and inspect the damage. Members of the syndicate wait for the victim to approach and confront them about the car's damage. The moment the victim alights from his/her car, the suspects take the victim's car at gunpoint.
2. Attacking Vehicles in Heavy Traffic
Thieves typically work in pairs. Spotting a potential victim driving a car with unlocked doors, a pair will force their way into the car stopped in heavy traffic or in an intersection taking away valuable items. The victim is threatened by a knife or a gun taking away his/her wallet and jewelry and sometimes forcing the victim to move to the passenger seat, drives the car to a deserted area, robs the victim or steal the car. In both cases, the victim has no chance of pursuing or even identifying the culprits.
3. “Salisi” Approach
In this approach, the gang will spot for potential victim, preferably with valuables inside the car. One member of the syndicate will get the attention of the victim by creating a scene or a diversionary tactic such as lying dead/injured or as if hit by the car. Once the victims step out from his/her car and approach/confront the so-called victim/syndicate, one member of the syndicate will sneak towards the car and take away valuable items. Oftentimes, the so-called victim/syndicate will demand for damages while creating a fuss to get public attention thus forcing the victim to pay the demands. This approach is also being applied in hijacking.
Security Countermeasures
1. Use extreme caution in all areas in the late afternoon or after dark when most carjacking occur.
2. Avoid travelling alone during unholy hours along roads that are either deserted or with little vehicular/pedestrian traffic.
3. Awareness of the local threat, the criminals' modus operandi and the possible consequences.
4. Always park your vehicle in well-lit secured areas.
5. Watch out for suspicious-looking people before you leave or approach your vehicle. Also try to go around the car to check the tires and any unusual object that may be tied to your vehicle to create noise when the car moves that will require you to go out of the vehicle and investigate while your engine is already running.
6. Do not leave valuables in a parked car that can make more attractive to criminals.
7. If you have a flat tire in an area you regard as unsafe, drive slowly until you find a safe place to stop.
8. Keep windows and doors locked while driving. Be familiar with the car central locking system.
9. Avoiding predictability in timing, routes, and parking. Avoid using the same roads routinely and avoid isolated roads, and where possible, do not drive at night in high risk areas.
10. If your vehicle is bumped or hit, do not stop or leave the vehicle unless you are sure it is safe to do so. The bump may be a prelude to a hi-jacking, robbery, or assault.
11. Carjackers may also pose as persons in need of assistance. Do not stop to help, but notify police of the person's whereabouts.
12. If being victimised by “salisi” gang, drive towards a safer place preferably with police officers around.
13. Always keep a means of emergency communication with readily available emergency contact numbers (speed dial).
Things To Do when Carjacked
1. If you are attacked, drive away if it is possible to do so. If driving away is not an option, switch on your hazard lights and press your horn to call for help or attract attention that may frighten away the attacker(s).
2. If you have a cell phone, use it to call for help.
3. Consider that a criminal who approaches you is likely to be dangerously nervous and/or under the influence of drugs. Therefore, make no hasty movements, react as calmly as possible, and display your agreement to give up your vehicle. Keep your hands in sights and if you have passengers, tell them to co-operate.
4. If the Carjacker makes clear his intent is to steal your vehicle, co-operate fully. Mentally accept the loss of your vehicle and its material content.
5. If you have to get out of your vehicle, do so slowly and calmly. Leave the vehicle keys in the ignition. If wearing a seat belt, make sure you are in full view of the criminal before seeking to undo the belt, and state loudly what you are about to do.
6. Avoid eye contact with the carjacker. He may think you are storing details for later use in identifying him to the police.
7. Do not talk unless the carjacker demands it. Do not reveal your anger. Do nothing to antagonise.
8. Walk away quietly from the vehicle, facing the criminal but with eyes clearly or obviously averted.
9. If your vehicle is equipped with an immobilisation switch that can be operated remotely, wait until the criminal has departed before you activate the switch.
10. Contact authorities immediately.

Gratitude
2 Corinthians 2:12-17
"But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him."
(2 CORINTHIANS 2:14)
Serving as chaplain with the Sheriff's Office and volunteering in the south county office, I answer the phone, take minor crime reports, welcome visitors and support the law enforcement staff working there. A few weeks ago a local citizen stopped in and said, "I just wanted to come by and say thank you for all you do for us here in the community." It was a simple comment, yet profound and heartily welcomed. It made the day for everyone in the office.
Gratitude, that twin of contentment, is of immense importance to us. Paul breaks from his narrative and offers praise and thanks to God, drawing our focus in verse 14 not to ourselves and what we have done, but to God and His wonderful saving work through Jesus for us. Through our gratitude-filled lives, God spreads "the aroma of Christ." With joyful hearts that are quick to be thankful, the sweet, lingering smell of the grace of Jesus will flood over our families, our homes, our neighborhoods, and beyond. Have you expressed your thanks to God today?

Joy, Prayer, Thanks

While serving with the Far East Broadcasting Company on the island of Okinawa, our house was often filled with military men and women. Families enduring the stress of war came to us for meals, Bible study and fellowship, and a home away from home for them. The time to rotate back to the US came, and often they would ask, "What do we look for in a good church?" My answer was simple. "Find a church that is prayerful, thankful, and joyful."
These three priorities are essential for each of us as they give life to our faith and show that it is real. Joy will indeed be evident in us always as we become people who pray continually. No matter what the circumstance - through the hard times as well as the good times - be thankful. We live in a world where many believe they are entitled to an easy, charmed way of life. But rarely does a spirit of thankfulness follow a spirit of entitlement. Paul's words would not be popular in today's world. But they will help us grow into godly people, and be "the Church" we're meant to be.

Intercessors
1 Samuel 12:16-24
"As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right."
(1 SAMUEL 12:23)
Praying for others is simply bringing someone before the Lord in a time of need. Paul tells us to "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests" (Ephesians 6:18). He even goes on to ask the believers in Ephesus to pray for him (vv.19-20), reminding us that whether we are "baby Christians" - just new in the Lord - or long-time Christians, we still have needs to lay before the Lord in prayer. Paul also tells us to "not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6). We really do have a Heavenly Father who delights in hearing of our anxieties, concerns and issues through prayer.
We were sitting at our dining table with our two granddaughters, age twelve and eight. We mentioned that a cousin was having a very serious surgery and we needed to pray for her. The younger of the girls said, "Well, what are we waiting for? Let's pray right now!" People need prayer. What are we waiting for?

Joy in Prayer
Philippians 1:1-11
"I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now..."(PHILIPPIANS 1:3-5)
One of the great joys we know as Christians is praying for each other. Paul begins his letter to the church in Philippi with words about the joy it is to pray for them because of the partnership they share through Jesus Christ.
Do you "pray with joy"? It's easy for our prayers to be focused on the needs, tragedies, and heartaches in our lives and those we pray for. Sometimes prayer only comes when an unexpected catastrophe or daunting challenge faces us, and we run to God in desperation. Where is the joy in prayer then?
Thankfully, God listens to and regards our desperate cries as much as our praises and words of thanks. He loves to hear us! Paul prayed with joy, remembering how he and his Philippian friends shared in the good news of Jesus. When we remember that we are partners in the Gospel with people around the world, our hearts turn to joy. Even if you are a new believer, there is probably someone in your life who is a Christ-follower who knows and understands the joy you both share in Jesus.

Who is Jesus? Who do you think he is? Christians believe he is God incarnate and Savior. But did Jesus of Nazareth ever make such a claim? Did he think he was God?
Root out the problems
Beware of quick-fix solutions that end up being worse than the problems they are intended to solve. There’s nothing to be gained from a cure that is worse than the disease.
And there’s certainly nothing to be gained from a solution that merely masks or delays the problem without addressing the underlying cause. When there’s a problem in your life, get to work rooting out the core of that problem.
Facing a challenge requires effort, and yet that effort is necessary only for a relatively short time. Running from the challenge requires ever-increasing effort that has no end.
The sooner you start working through a problem, the more quickly you’ll have that problem behind you. The earlier you deal with the root cause of the problem, the more effective your efforts will be.
Truly eliminating the cause of the problem does indeed take more work than quickly fixing the symptoms. Yet once the difficult work is done to remove the problem, it’s gone for good.
Do the work to root out each problem at its core. And your efforts will bring lasting rewards.

ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (MAY 29, 2012)
The Song of Faith
James 5:13-20
"Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise."
JAMES 5:13
One of the most enjoyable experiences during our years with the FEBC on Okinawa was producing the program "Dial-a-Song." What began as a 1-hour request show eventually turned into a 6-hour evening on Saturdays from 6pm to midnight. A team of servicemen answered the phones to take requests, pulled the records from the library, and handed the records off to me. The music was a testimony to the faith of the listeners who participated. I can't tell you how many times listeners let us know "that's just what I needed to hear tonight."
When dealing with difficult life situations, have you ever sensed God using the words of a song to strengthen your faith? In His presence we experience the grace, mercy, faithfulness and great joy that are expressed through the song of praise.
James is telling us that God delights in using songs of praise in our lives. After all, He is the One who created music at the beginning of time! And when this life is over, the song we sing with Him in heaven will know no bounds!

ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (MAY 30, 2012)
Come to the Party
John 2:1-11
"Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, 'Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.'"
JOHN 2:9-10
Can you imagine the joy of having Jesus at your party? The master of the banquet in this story probably did not realize the One who created the very vines and fruit that made the wine was right there in his midst. Jesus was concerned about a detail like running out of wine at a wedding. He was and is Lord over all!
It's a lot easier to say with written words that we are a part of a greater party for Jesus than it is to live that out in reality. It seems that each day brings new worries, letdowns, injustices and emergencies...not exactly the stuff of parties. Yet this is where He meets us. Into our world of heartaches, Jesus comes near. He carries us through life's agonies so that we know His mercy and grace. Jesus may have provided wine at the wedding that day, but His greater providence was of His own shed blood so that all of us who believe would know the true celebration of life in Him. 4 “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”

11 This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

ANCHOR DEVOTIONS (MAY 28, 2012)
All Praise to God
Ezra 7:21-28
"Praise be to the Lord, the God of our fathers, who has put it into the king's heart to bring honor to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem in this way."
(EZRA 7:27)
Ezra is acknowledging that God orchestrated the past harsh captivity that God's people experienced and would now work through a pagan king to give Judah hope for the future. Our all-powerful God is more than capable to "put it into the king's heart" to change when we are confronted with issues beyond our control. We do not need to lose heart.
Back in the early 1970s I was asking God to change the minds of world leaders of the USA and Japan to allow our English language radio station to continue its broadcasting on Okinawa after the Ryukyu Islands were returned to Japan. The US had administrated them since the conclusion of WW2. In Japan it was not possible for a "foreign owned" station to broadcast. Yet, God began to move to make the miracle happen. There were letters, visits, lots of prayer, and on June 23, 1972, the Japan Times printed an article, "Gov't Issues Advance License to FEBC." What an answer to prayer and what an opportunity to celebrate and praise God for abundant blessing and direction!

A Time to Celebrate
Nehemiah 12:27-43
"And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away."
(NEHEMIAH 12:43)
Over many years of ministry, I've enjoyed celebrations. Our church in Oakland held a huge anniversary party even though the streets were flooded after a storm; we joined in on the memorable anniversary festivities at our former church in Rockford; on Okinawa when we turned off the transmitter for the final time with the Far East Broadcasting Company, a grand celebration was in order to rejoice in God's blessings and changed lives over 25 years of service.
The practice of celebrating God's goodness was made known to us throughout the Bible with His chosen people. Years after Nebuchadnezzar's army destroyed Jerusalem and left its walls in ruin, Nehemiah arrived. Finding not only broken down walls, but also broken lives, he rallied the people to listen as Ezra read God's Word aloud. They realized their sinfulness, repented, changed their behavior and reassembled to rebuild the walls and their lives. They celebrated God! In our brokenness, God calls to us, offers Himself afresh and rebuilds our lives as He did for the Israelites.

Dedication of the Wall of Jerusalem
27 At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps and lyres. 28 The singers also were brought together from the region around Jerusalem—from the villages of the Netophathites, 29 from Beth Gilgal, and from the area of Geba and Azmaveth, for the singers had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem. 30 When the priests and Levites had purified themselves ceremonially, they purified the people, the gates and the wall.
31 I had the leaders of Judah go up on top[a] of the wall. I also assigned two large choirs to give thanks. Celebrate Faithfulness
Esther 9:20-32
"Mordecai... [had] them celebrate...the time when the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month when their sorrow was turned into joy and their mourning into a day of celebration."
(ESTHER 9:20-22)
From the Old Testament story of Esther, we learn about the Jewish celebration of the Festival of Purim. It was to be a celebration of the nation's survival after God-fearing Esther and her uncle Mordecai were used strategically by God to save His chosen people whom the enemy tried to destroy. The festival would commemorate the defeat of Haman's evil plan and celebrate God's faithfulness. It was an occasion of genuine joy born out of sorrow. The people would rest, share food with each other, and offer gifts to the poor.
It is so like our God to send in Esther as a rescuer of His people, someone who seemed unlikely and who came just when the people needed it most. With the lives of all the Jews about to be stamped out, it is no wonder Mordecai described their joy as coming out of mourning.
And isn't that the same basis for our true joy today? Even while we were yet sinners - people deserving of death - God sent His Rescuer for us. Jesus brings joy out of the sorrows of our lives. Let's celebrate!
INSIGHT
WE HAVE MUCH TO CELEBRATE BECAUSE OUR KING BORE OUR SORROWS AND SINS ON THE CROSS, BRINGING ULTIMATE JOY FROM THE ULTIMATE INJUSTICE.

20 Mordecai recorded these events, and he sent letters to all the Jews throughout the provinces of King Xerxes, near and far, 21 to have them celebrate annually the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar 22 as the time when the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month when their sorrow was turned into joy and their mourning into a day of celebration. He wrote them to observe the days as days of feasting and joy and giving presents of food to one another and gifts to the poor.

29 So Queen Esther, daughter of Abihail, along with Mordecai the Jew, wrote with full authority to confirm this second letter concerning Purim. 30 And Mordecai sent letters to all the Jews in the 127 provinces of Xerxes’ kingdom—words of goodwill and assurance— 31 to establish these days of Purim at their designated times, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had decreed for them, and as they had established for themselves and their descendants in regard to their times of fasting and lamentation. 32 Esther’s decree confirmed these regulations about Purim, and it was written down in the records.
